Closet Design is a 2-Way Street

Very often I meet with a client for a closet design consultation and realize, within the first few minutes, that we’re speaking two different languages. Most people have never heard of a 32 mm closet system, and why would they? Their frame of reference is usually the single rod and shelf they’ve lived with for the past fifteen years. Meanwhile, my mind is already dividing the closet into vertical zones and mentally placing components to match their wish list.

The first part of the consultation can feel like a translation exercise. I’m trying to explain how we—closet designers—think about space, while the client is trying to describe how they imagine using it. If I’m not careful, I can lose a client’s trust by seeming closed to their ideas. A client may have a clear vision, and if they feel I’m steering them away from it or not hearing them, the connection breaks long before we ever talk about finishes or accessories.

That’s the moment when the designer needs to pause. Before diving into system holes, vertical partitions, or clever storage solutions, we as designers have to listen—really listen. Because closet design isn’t just about maximizing space. It’s about meeting people where they are, understanding how they live, and building a shared language so the design becomes something we create together.

Most clients have never heard the term 32 mm closet system, and when it comes up in a consultation, their minds often jump straight to “kit.” To them, “system holes” sound like something from a flatpack box store. But a 32 mm system isn’t a kit at all—it’s the opposite. It’s a framework that gives us enormous flexibility while still providing the structure needed for a wide range of components and storage applications.

A true 32 mm system lets us build a continuous, custom cabinet that can include anything you need: drawers, doors, rods, hampers, lighting, shoe storage, or specialized accessories. It adapts to large walkins and tiny reachins with equal ease. Instead of forcing your space to fit a product, the system allows the product to fit your space—precisely and efficiently.

When clients understand this, the conversation shifts. We’re no longer talking about “kits” or “pieces,” but about a flexible architectural system that supports the way they live. And once we’re speaking the same language, the design process becomes collaborative, creative, and far more enjoyable for everyone.

What Is a 32 mm Closet System?

If you’ve never heard the term 32 mm closet system, you’re not alone. Most homeowners haven’t. But understanding this concept is the key to understanding how modern custom closets are built — and why they’re so flexible, durable, and efficient.

A 32 mm system is simply a precise, modular way of building cabinetry. Instead of guessing where shelves, rods, drawers, or accessories should go, we use a series of evenly spaced holes — each 32 mm (about 1¼ inches) apart — to create a consistent grid inside the closet. This grid becomes the backbone of the entire design.

Think of it like the studs inside a wall:
you don’t see them, but they determine where everything else can go.

In a closet, this system gives us a framework that is:

Flexible

Shelves can move. Rods can shift up or down. Accessories can be added later. Your closet can evolve as your needs change — without rebuilding anything.

Precise

Because everything is based on a consistent grid, components line up perfectly. Drawers glide smoothly. Doors reveal evenly. Lighting integrates cleanly. The whole system feels intentional and well‑crafted.

Customizable

A 32 mm system isn’t a “kit.” It’s a custom cabinet built on a modular foundation. That means we can design:

  • Full‑height cabinets
  • Open shelving
  • Double‑hang and long‑hang sections
  • Drawers and doors
  • Hampers, shoe storage, and accessories
  • Integrated lighting
  • Any width, any height, any configuration

All using the same underlying structure.

Efficient

Because the system is standardized, we can build closets that fit your space exactly — whether it’s a small reach‑in or a large walk‑in — without wasted material or awkward gaps.

Future‑proof

Life changes. Kids grow. Storage needs shift. A 32 mm system lets your closet adapt without starting over. You can add shelves, move rods, or reconfigure sections years later.

Why This Matters for You

When you hear “system holes,” it’s easy to picture a big‑box store kit. But a 32 mm system is the opposite of a kit. It’s the same construction method used in high‑end European cabinetry — precise, clean, and incredibly versatile.

For us at ClosetPlace, it’s the foundation that allows us to design a closet that fits your life, not the other way around. It gives us the freedom to create a continuous, built‑in cabinet with all the custom features you want, while keeping the structure strong, consistent, and beautiful.
